Is NASA a good Walt Disney World side trip?

The NASA Kennedy Space Center makes a great Walt Disney World side trip. If you are visiting Walt Disney World or any of the other major Orlando attractions then a visit to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is an absolute must-do. The Kennedy Space Center is an easy day trip from Orlando and makes an amazing day out for both kids and adults.

What is at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex?

The Kennedy Center Visitor Complex features several large space themed outdoor areas and indoor complexes named “Mission Zones”. These areas are designed to lead visitors chronologically through the evolution of NASA human space travel to the present day – and into the future of space exploration!

There is a plethora of historic NASA space and rocket memorabilia to see and learn about, including an iconic treasure – the real Atlantis space shuttle.

For the kids there are plenty of fun opportunities for exploration, play and hands-on learning, as well as a children’s indoor play area, a cinema, ride simulators and much more.

How long do I need to visit the Kennedy Space Center?

You need a full day to comfortably visit the Kennedy Space Center and all of its features. Two days is even better if you have the time to spare. There is just so much to see and do at NASA’s visitor’s center it’s a real challenge to fit it all in, in just one day!

What time does the Kennedy Space Center open?

The Kennedy Space Center opens at 9am every day and closes at 5pm. The center is open 7 days a week.

What should I do first at NASA?

Many visitors start their day at the Kennedy Space Center with the included Space Center bus tour which conveys visitors out to a remote display complex, the Apollo/Saturn V Center. The bus trip is an approximate two hour round-trip including time spent at the Apollo/Saturn V Center. Buses run every 15 minutes and the last bus is two and a half hours before closing time. Therefore, it may well be prudent to complete the bus tour part of your visit sooner rather than later.

What is the NASA bus tour like?

This excellent on-site Behind the Gates bus trip out to the Apollo/Saturn V Center should be an essential part of any Kennedy Center visit. With video narration throughout the twenty-minute bus trip, several NASA areas and installations such as the Vehicle Assembly Building are passed along the way to the Apollo/Saturn V Center.

Upon arrival, visitors alight from the coaches and enter the he Apollo/Saturn V Center. The first part of the visit includes an introductory re-enactment of the first NASA Apollo mission launch. After the re-enactment visitors enter the main area of the Center and have the opportunity to walk beneath the Saturn V rocket – the largest rocket type to ever fly! It’s this kind of rocket which was used for the Apollo moon missions.

The Apollo/Saturn V Center has lots of things to see and do, including lunar displays, the Talk To An Astronaut interactive experience, The Right Stuff space gift shop, the large buffet Moon Rock restaurant, an outside area which contains launch viewing seats, and more. You can even look across to view the actual launch pad for SpaceX across the water strait!

Where can I see a space shuttle?

You can see a real space shuttle at Kennedy Space Center Visitor’s Complex.

Housed in its own enormous display hangar building fronted by its towering twin solid rocket boosters and a fuel tank, the Atlantis Space Shuttle is first introduced to visitors with an immersive audio-visual presentation all about the historic space shuttle program.

Upon the big reveal of the appearance of the Space Shuttle Atlantis a spontaneous round of applause breaks out – this is the NASA magic and wonder that we all came for. It suddenly appears, larger than life. A huge piece of USA space history that many of us grew up watching on TV, right in front of us. A gigantic Space Shuttle. This is a real wow-moment!
