Samantha and Brooke, the ever-adventurous Let’s Go Mum! kids were delighted to be given the opportunity to interview Velma Dinkley – of Scooby-Doo fame!

Velma is the brains of the Mystery Inc. gang. She is is funny, brave and super smart. Velma asks lots of questions and often uncovers clues in the most unlikely places. Let’s learn about what she’s been up to lately – over to you Samantha and Brooke!

Velma, Scooby-Doo is one of our absolute favourite shows – it’s wonderful to be able to interview you, and we have a stack of questions to ask you!

So Velma, what have you been up to lately? 

Well, funny you should ask. I’ve been hard at work programming a new App, it’s called Spookify and it is used to detect ghosts and other paranormal activity. Well, it will be used for that, I still haven’t ironed out all the bugs, but the initial data I have been downloading indicates there no ghosts in the current vicinity. Actually, maybe its still not working… jinkies! 

How did you get so smart?

Well I do try hard at school, and I enjoy learning new things. Mostly I am just determined decipher the clues and solve the mysteries we come across in a day to day lives. I think maybe I was born this way! 

Is orange your favourite colour?

Of course it is, I have a whole closet full or orange sweaters! I just love it, orange is the best colour because it makes you happy. 

What sports do you like?

Sports? Oh, I was never very good at sports… but did you know Chess is a sport? So there, that would be it – Chess – Chess is my favourite sport. 

Does Scooby-Doo really eat that much?

Between me and you, jeepers, both Scooby and Shaggy eat a lot. They’re always drinking milk shakes or eating Scooby snacks, and when they’re not eating, they’re talking about food. They are food-obsessed! 

We really love cats – do you love cats or just dogs?

I love all creatures great and small, although I do suffer from allergies so some of those really fluffy cats can cause me to sneeze and fog up my glasses, which can be very annoying, especially when I’m looking for clues. But generally, yes, all animals are our furry friends. 

What are you planning to do next?

We’ll were heading down under to visit our friends and help solve an unusual mystery. An all new technology company has hatched an evil plan that could spell out the end of classic video games forever! But don’t panic, the Mystery Inc gang and myself are on the case. 

Have you been to Australia before?

Oh yes many times, we love your country and everyone is so relaxed. We just can’t wait to visit again! 

Hey Velma, are you the greatest mystery-solver in the world?

Well, ahem, I wouldn’t say that. Although my success rate in getting to the bottom of things is pretty high. If only I could get this Spookify App working properly… 

Do you ever get time to relax?

I’m relaxing right now, aren’t I? Unravelling a good mystery is the way that I chill.

Do you have different types of glasses (other than the ones you always wear!)?

These are my preferred spectacles, true, but I do have a number of different glasses for different occasions. Most recently I received a pair of these Boggle Goggles, months before they came out, I just haven’t quite figured out how they work yet. But I’m sure I will in time for my trip to Australia.

One on One with Olaf the Snowman

Samantha and Brooke, the ever-adventurous Let’s Go Mum! kids were delighted to be given the opportunity to interview Olaf the Snowman – of Frozen fame! Let’s learn about what he’s up to – over to you Samantha and Brooke!

Olaf, we’ve been huge fans of you since we first saw the Frozen movie! It’s really great to be here in Arendelle getting to meet you. Can you tell us, what is the best thing about being a snowman?

That’s easy: warm hugs. Oh wait, can I change my answer? (Phew) Good. I forgot you said “the best” thing! The BEST thing is having my own personal snow flurry. No. Wait… I take it back; it’s definitely the warm hugs… AND the personal snow flurry! And a detachable head.

And the worst?

I don’t understand the question.

Never mind. Tell us about your amazing orange nose.  Is it made from what I think it is?

Well if you think it’s made from a special magic Troll crystal, then no. It’s a carrot! A very special carrot that apparently reindeer really like to kiss… a lot!

Do you have any brothers or sisters?

You mean like my little brother, Marshmallow? If you do, then yes! Yes I do. Have you met him – ‘cause he likes meeting new people. Not a big hugger though. More like a big roarer and swiper and thrower – He’s really good at it. 

Olaf, what do you like to dream about?

Summer! Definitely summer. I’ve always dreamt about summer and sun and all things hot.

Do you have any hobbies?

Giving warm hugs. Getting warm hugs. Playing with Sven. Sitting in front of a fire… for a very short time. Ice-skating with Anna and Elsa. Watching Kristoff carry around ice. Staring at the sky. You know, the usual kinds of things.

Here’s a great July school holidays idea – take the kids to see Snugglepot and Cuddlepie!

We’ve just been to see the fabulous Snugglepot and Cuddlepie Live Show, now playing at the Sydney Opera House. This is the perfect opportunity to introduce a whole new generation of Australian children to the charm and wonder of this May Gibb’s classic children’s tale, brought to life in a wonderful new stage production!

The Snugglepot and Cuddlepie live stage show is presented in the Opera House Playhouse, affording everyone an excellent view of the stage. With a cast of just four main players, each of May Gibb’s comical characters is magically brought to life in a series of scenes that remain true to the charming May Gibb’s stories from her Australian classic fairytale books.

In the show, our stars Snugglepot and Cuddlepie immediately engage their young audience with their hilarious antics and brilliant comic timing. These lovable gumnuts are a truly a joy to watch!

A sartorially splendid lizard, ruffled owl, hapless possum, innocent Little Ragged-Blossom and helpful frog all carry the children along on a rollicking tale touched with suspense and a few scary moments thanks to the slithering-ly threatening snake and growl-y Big Bad Banksia Man.

I love to watch my kid’s faces during a show they are really enjoying, and both girls were completely entranced with Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. The intimate theatre and up-close-and-personal nature of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie really grab and hold children’s attention through out the entire show – not one bored fidget to be seen!

This beautiful and highly entertaining stage show is recommended for the 5+ age range, however you don’t need to be a child to appreciate the charm of the Snugglepot and Cuddlepie Live Show -it really is a very watch-able, fun piece of live theatre for the whole family.

As an extra treat, outside of the theatre you will find not only a kids life-sized video game (this is lots of fun), but a special display of beautiful May Gibb’s illustrations from Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. Here you can also buy a Snugglepot and Cuddlepie story book as a memorable keepsake.

Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village is waaay too well-kept a secret in the city of Warrnambool! I vaguely remembered a Shipwreck tourist centre a long time ago, but it has since developed into a really fantastic tourist attraction – and until we’d hit Port Campbell, we’d never even heard it referred to! Luckily, a friendly local in Port Campbell had told us how Warrnambool had a really great olden-time shipwreck village, otherwise we may have missed this gem.

Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village is a step-back-in-time experience – an 1800’s Maritime fishing village. You can walk through the village along cobblestones and check out the old buildings, see people walking about it period costume – it’s all great fun! The kids absolutely loved inspecting everything – especially petting the live animals about the place!

So when we heard that they not only had an evening sound-and-light show, but that it was a recreation of the sinking of the Loch Ard – the ship we had been listening to the story of on the car’s CD player, and that we had stopped and viewed the actual site of the sinking of – we were incredibly eager to see it.

The Sound and Laser show didn’t start until 9pm so that it was properly dark when it began. We all met up at the entrance, and were handed our “boarding passes” to the Loch Ard! The scene was effectively set! My two were the only children, being that school holidays were now over.

Then we were taken down and led through the village by lantern-light (okay, well electric lantern, but still fun!). The kids were allowed to each carry one, which was kid-heaven for Brooke and Samantha – wandering through a dark old cobblestone village carrying a lantern and hearing tales of woe about shipwrecks? It doesn’t get much better than that when you are 7 and 9 years old! But the best was yet to come….

We were led down to the village dock-side, with short stories told to us each step of the way by our excellent guide. At one point we were even shown the lead “pigs” that had once been in the hull of the Loch Ard – and which had caused her to sink so fast! We touched them in awe, imagining the gloomy depths that they had been hauled out of…and now here they were, right in front of us!

We were then directed into a theatre, and we all took a seat in anticipation. Everyone was warned not to sit in the front row, as they might get wet. On hearing that, both kids immediately wanted to sit there of course!

A mini-movie rolled on the large screen with actors playing the parts in the sinking of the Loch Ard. The movie was about twenty minutes long and was absolutely fascinating. It went into realistic detail about life on board an 1800’s sailing ship – the miserable conditions, the awful weather, shelter and food…even for such privileged passengers, it made us very glad not to be them – and that was without their looming disaster!

Tip!  If you go to the light and sound show first you’ll get discounted entry to the Maritime Village the next day

Then the screen and the backdrop curtain raised, and we were looking outside at where dockside lake was, only there was an artificial misty rain falling – this would act as a “canvas” for the laser lights.

Through the rain began a laser light show like no other – it actually recreated the sinking of the Loch Ard ship with laser lights! The sound effects were realistically exciting and scary – the ship was heading for a rocky outcrop island – look out! The Loch Ard laser-light ship met its watery doom, sliding silently into the real lake and taking all but two souls with her – it was quite an effect. We couldn’t tear our eyes away – what a show!

We returned back up through the dark village to the exit, chatting excitedly all the way. Before we left we stopped in at the souvenir shop for books on shipwrecks, little treasure chests and a small Loch Ard sailing ship to remember the night.

If you’re nearby Warrnambool finishing up your Great Ocean Road holiday, do not miss this show, especially if you have children who love a bit of adventure (really, whose don’t?)! It’s more than worth the entry price, especially if you compare it to the Ballarat light and sound show. Plus if you go to the light and sound show first you’ll get a 30%-off-discount on your day-tickets to the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village the next day!
