What is Summernats?

Summernats is known for it’s loud cars, mullets and black t-shirts – but there’s so much to this exciting Canberra car festival than just that! It’s a really fun family-friendly event that even us non-car enthusiasts can really enjoy!

Summernats is a huge annual car festival held in Canberra. It’s really popular with all kinds of car enthusiasts. Vehicles featured can be anything from souped up street cars to classic vehicles, rally cars to hot rods.

There are several car competitions held over the weekend. Competitions include presentation of vehicles such as the Show and Shine, and driving skills competitions such as the burn out competition where competitors spin their car wheels to make smoke until eventually something gives – usually the tyres!  There are car cruise parades, fireworks on Saturday night and outdoor rock concerts. This year there was an aerial stunt show several times a day over the grounds.

At Summernats you’ll also find lots of car-themed shopping, every outdoor food stall you can think of, numerous outdoor bars and several display pavilions for car products and hotted-up display cars.

It’s safe to say that although the Summernats has a high admission cost, there is lots to see and do!

One event to put in your calendars for January 2026 is the Street Machine Summernats Australian Car Festival!

Head on down to Canberra for some great rev-head fun as car-loving fans from all-over Australia converge on the National Capital for the Summernats Annual Car Festival.

Summernats 37 2025 Car Festival Canberra – the year that was

We attended on the Friday of Summernats 37 and had an absolute ball checking out the Show and Shine cars, shopping stalls, food, car displays and of course the famous burn outs!

The 2025 Festival ran from Thursday the 2nd of January to Sunday the 6th of January 2025.

Now with its conclusion, eyes turn to planning next year’s Summernats 38. From our day at Summernats this year we gained some valuable insights in how to prepare for a successful Summernats visit!

What are the Summernats 2026 Dates?

The Summernats Car Festival in the ACT will be run a little later next year, from Thursday January 8th to Sunday 11th 2026.

Is Summernats safe for kids?

When I went to Summernats as a 20-something it was all still pretty new, and it fast grew a reputation for young women flashing, drunk driving, burn outs all around the grounds and basically trashing Northbourne Avenue – Canberra’s main road in. The locals in particular were not very happy with how Summernats visitors were treating the area, and families didn’t feel it was a safe environment to take children to. But all that has changed.

Is Summernats Family Friendly now?

Yes! The ACT Government and Summernats organisers worked together to clean Summernats up and make it more attractive as a family attraction. One of the main measures was moving the date of the car festival to after New Year’s Eve instead of during, to avoid combining the two celebrations. Another was restricting the street access to temporary road-closures and a single organised city cruise at the start of the car festival. Permanent car barriers were also installed along Northbourne Avenue.

Inside the venue, safety measures were strengthened with increased security and policing. Fences and barriers now line the internal cruising roads and are speed limited to 20kph, and pedestrian access and crossings are strictly controlled. As a result, Summernats is now very safe – and family-friendly!

What can kids do at Summernats?

Kids love watching the brightly painted, loud cars cruising up and down and burning out brightly coloured smoke. There are kid-friendly give aways in the pavilions, kid-friendly food and snacks and kid-tailored merchandise like blow up swords and even show bags.

For the bigger kids and teenagers there are go-karts, and lots more. My teenager was excited to get a free big finger to wave at the burn outs and an in-person meet and greet with motorsport legend John Bowe at the Rare Spares stand.

What should I take to Summernats?

One thing about Summernats is that it is hot-hot-hot! The weather is usually around thirty degrees, but with the all-concrete and tar surrounds it feels hotter still!

The standard Summernats uniform is appropriately shorts, t-shirts (all black usually!) and huge Mexican sombreros which are available for purchase from around $15.

Cold drinks, slushies and of course many food vendors are scattered everywhere around EPIC, but shade can be sparing. Whilst the reserved grandstands for Burn Outs is covered, the general grandstand for casual day attenders is not. Prepare for the heat.

At a minimum, here are the Summernats essentials:

1. Sunblock
2. Wide Brimmed Hat
3. Ear plugs or headphones for the kids, those sensitive to noise such as for Autism – and for everyone else for burn outs! – Tip: Rare Spares stall inside a main pavilion offered free ear plugs (and big hands!) this year.
4. A refillable water bottle – Tip: there are water refilling stations which are connected to hoses and not chilled, but numerous bars offer free water which is chilled.
5. Pram shades and fans

Prebooking is highly recommended for the following Summernats services and merchandise

One of the frustrating things for day visitors is that even attending in the early days, event entrants have basically sold out some options. Here are some services and merchandise you may like to consider booking in advance:

• Parking everyday
• Casual day tickets for the main day of Saturday
• Season Passes were unavailable by Friday
• Event T-Shirt men’s medium and large sizes were sold out by Friday morning.

How much are Summernats T-shirts?

We bought Summernats event T-Shirts for $50 each, both men’s and women’s. Men’s medium and large sizes were already sold out by Friday and also the brightly coloured bucket hats, so get those first! Also available is a large range of branded Summernats official merchandise including hoodies, caps and much more.

How much are tickets to Summernats?

Adult (17+) casual day tickets start from $85 per day.

Child/Youth (11-16) tickets start from $55 per day.

Kids 10 and under are free.

Family tickets start from $215.

Are there Concession Tickets to Summernats?

No, however accompanying Carers/NSW Companion Card companions enter free.

How much is it to park at Summernats?

Casual parking is $35 per day, however car parks can pre-book up very quickly. The ACT Government offer a park and ride service as a backup. A Tram Station is located within ten minutes walk of the venue.

A massive movie-hit around Australia and the world, we were privileged to attend the Sydney Premiere of WICKED the movie – and haven’t stopped singing yet!

Which is the best family movie to see these Christmas school holidays?

Released by Universal Pictures, this gorgeous Wizard of Oz timeline movie was masterfully directed by Jon M Chu and has already amassed over 500 million US dollars at the box office. But what you need to know is that school age kids up will be enchanted by this great story of the unlikely, charming friendship of two witches – Glinda & Elphaba. I love the moments of comedy and light-heartedness of the story. If you’ve seen the theatre show like us, we think you’ll love this adaptation too. Don’t forget to wear baby pink if you are team Glinda, and Emerald green if you are team Elphaba! WICKED is a great movie all around, and a must see whilst it’s still in cinemas so that you can soak up the vibe of all the other fans having fun getting in to it. If you’ve already seen WICKED, why not go again? There are even sing-along versions playing in many cinemas now!

WICKED is only in cinemas these Christmas School Holidays.

When does the WICKED movie stop showing in cinemas?

The WICKED movie premiered in November 2024, and it’s now available to watch on streaming services. Wicked sing-a-long versions are expected to continue showing in cinemas well into 2025.

What ages is WICKED the movie suitable for?

The general consensus age to watch Wicked the Movie is 6 and up – with parental guidance. Most of the film is light-hearted and fun, however especially towards the end it does get a little scary and dark.

2. – Canberra Dendy Imax & national cinemas – MUFASA

We were excited to be invited to the VIP Opening of Canberra Dendy’s brand-new IMAX cinema theatre. This truly immersive luxury theatre has set new standards in just how good a cinema experience can be. On the night we enjoyed watching the Premiere screening of Disney’s new MUFASA: The Lion King movie.

Disney’s MUFASA: The Lion King Movie Review

MUFASA is Disney’s new musical movie. The prequel tale to the smash-hit Disney movie THE LION KING, in MUFASA we learn the story of Mufasa, Simba’s father. The tale follows Mufasa as a small cub, separated from his parents. Mufasa is saved by his new lion cub friend Taka, and other extraordinary characters who join together as a band of misfits. They embark upon an adventure across the pride lands, testing their bravery and friendship before Mufasa’s reign as Lion King. MAGIC BEACH Movie Review

THE WILD ROBOT is a truly gorgeous school holidays movie choice. My family loved it – it had us all completely invested the whole way through – and best of all this charming all-ages movie will suit everyone in the family!

In space no one can hear you scream…but you know where they can hear you scream? The movies. That’s where they can hear you scream.

Which is the best teen movie to see these school holidays?

Alien: Romulus – it’s terrifyingly good!

We were thrilled to be invited to the Sydney movie premiere of Alien Romulus. As soon as it finished my teenage daughters and I wanted to watch it again immediately because it’s so good!

Alien Romulus is well-worth watching and a great activity to enjoy with your older kids these school holidays  – but get ready to scream!

My family recently had the pleasure of attending the Rainforest World Music Festival 2023 (also known as the RWMF) and both my kids and I all agreed it was a fantastic holiday – we can’t wait to attend the Rainforest World Music Festival 2024!

What is the Rainforest World Music Festival?

The Rainforest World Music Festival is a celebration and coming together of the world’s different music and cultures in a beautiful natural setting. It draws people to it from all around the world, and is often sold-out.

Combined with cultural presentations, workshops and traditional and contemporary arts and crafts held by day, the Rainforest World Music Festival also showcases an impressive array of delicious world-food stalls representing many countries and nationalities.

This incredibly unique festival is both an amazing event – and a great family holiday destination!

The Rainforest World Music Festival is held over three days and nights.

Is the Rainforest World Music Festival held in a rainforest?

Yes – or at least, right next to it! The Rainforest World Music Festival is held inside the Sarawak Cultural Village which is located at the foot of the rainforest clad slopes of Mount Santubong in Kuching, Sarawak.

The expansive two-stage concert area is showcased by its lawn amphitheatre, and backs onto a lush rainforest jungle.

Explore Kuching during the day and dance through the night!

Our Sarawak visit days were made up of having fun learning about the local culture at the Sarawak Cultural Village, Kampung Budaya Sarawak , or exploring the local area of Kuching.

Often during the afternoons we would head back to our deluxe accommodation at Damai Beach Resort to take a break at our stunning clifftop villa or go for a swim in the pool before returning to the Sarawak Cultural Village in the evening for all three nights of wonderful music concerts from around the world at the Rainforest World Music Festival.

The Gypsy Kings and Big Mountain

The Rainforest World Music Festival 2023 featured the huge headline acts Gypsy Kings and Big Mountain, plus there was an impressive line up of both local and international bands and performers. You know that you’re going to experience some incredible music acts as the festival attracts top performers from around the world!

From Russian throat singing to African dance and drum troupes to reggae and rock – the Rainforest World Music Festival has it all!

The family friendly music festival

Best of all, the atmosphere is one of family-friendly fun. The audience atmosphere at the festival was one of enjoyment and relaxation.

Some families spread blankets on the grass lawn and hills surrounding the performance stages. Other concert-goers preferred to dance and sing along with their favourites up front, near the stage.

The music started in the early evening and continued deep into the night, so you could pick and choose if you only wanted to stay for a few hours, or for the entire time.

Festival security and safety

The festival organisation is one of precision with safety in mind. Entry to the festival is controlled via a daily wristband system and security is present.

My family felt completely safe at all times of the day and night in Sirawak, no matter where we were – from the beach at night to the very front of the music concerts dancing and singing along with the other festival attendees!

The Sarawak community is one of warm welcome and friendship.

Sarawak Cultural Village

The Rainforest World Music festival is held in the Sarawak Cultural Village, a wonderful tourist destination all of its own.

We loved exploring the traditional raised and long houses, climbing up the wooden stairways and balancing along the bamboo bridge! There is so much to see and do at the cultural village.

We joined in on some really fun traditional dances, and you can even learn how a dart blow pipe works there!

Festival Workshops

During the day there are all kinds of special workshops you can join in on.

We all loved dance workshops, a drum workshop and a batik painting workshop where my daughters painted some gorgeous souvenir silk paintings we could take home with us. They now hang in pride of place in our home – a very special memento of our wonderful trip.

We beat the Malaysian percussion record!

During the festival there was an organised successful attempt at the Malaysian percussion record.

Everyone was given percussion instruments, or improvised with anything that could make musical rhythm – even water bottles with sand in worked beautifully! The result was a really fun music session of music festival attendees from right around the world making beautiful, rhythmic music together. We were so proud to be a part of it!

Delicious food from around the world

There was a huge range of international food choices at the Rainforest Festival. This was indeed Foodie heaven!

Every food you could possibly imagine was on sale – from exotic fresh fruits to delicious fried food and a huge range of drinks.

You can find every food your heart desires inside the huge food pavilion, and also dotted all around the festival grounds.

Delicious Malaysian dishes and other traditional Borneo delicacies soon became our new favourites, including red bean pancakes and fried-coral mushrooms!

Where can I stay for the Rainforest World Music Festival?

Like any trip, accommodation is a big part of it. There are many different hotel and luxury resort options in Sarawak, Borneo. We stayed close by in a beautiful beachside hotel, Damai Beach Resort.

One evening in Sarawak we also went on an evening excursion to the stunning Cove 55 boutique hotel. Set against the backdrop of the stunning Mount Santubong, Cove 55 offers elegant and exclusive Sarawak accommodation options.

There we enjoyed tropical cocktails and delicate hors d’oeuvres as we watched the sun sink into the South China Sea, marvelling at the beautiful infinity pool and over-water accommodation.

Kuching day trips – Bako National Park

The Rainforest World Music Festival of 2023 was a huge success. My family all loved it so much we’re already planning our visit for the next Rainforest World Music Festival in 2024.

We’ve recently previewed a whole bunch of family-friendly fun for you these September School holidays, and much of it you can only see during the Victorian, Canberra and NSW September school holidays!

1. – Sydney – WICKED the Musical

WICKED Australia is the smash hit musical now playing at the Sydney Lyric Theatre.

The untold true story of the witches of Oz, this wonderful musical is such a treat to see. We absolutely loved it from start to finish, with its blockbuster musical hits, amazing effects and sets.

Before the show there are even special Wicked themed Green Elixer and purple Ozmopolitan cocktails ($22 each) for Mum or Dad to try!

Wicked makes a great Sydney school holidays outing for families with older kids and teenagers to enjoy together!

The official recommended age to watch Wicked the Music is eight and up. There are some scary scenes and loud noises that may frighten younger children. (All theatre-goers must hold a valid ticket.)

2. – Melbourne – LEGO® exhibition – RELICS: A New World Rises

Melbourne Museum is one of Australia’s best. We always try to drop in whenever we’re in Melbourne – they have some amazing exhibits, including a full-size, real dinosaur skeleton!

Right now the Melbourne Museum have another reason to visit. The extra-special exhibit for LEGO® Lovers RELICS: A New World Rises is a LEGO® Minifig bonanza. These LEGO displays look simply amazing but really, we would expect nothing less because they are all created by LEGO Masters TV show 2020 Winners Jackson Harvey and Alex Towler.

This first of its kind exhibition is definitely one to check out these Melbourne school holidays. Be sure to give yourselves plenty of time to explore the Museum too, it’s brilliant for kids and truly world-class.

3. – Canberra – Floriade flower festival 2023

If you think a flower festival sounds boring for kids you couldn’t be more wrong! Floriade is an amazing annual festival for every member of the family with its acres of stunning blooms, exciting garden paths to explore, plus more gorgeous photo spots than you can poke a stick at! There’s plenty of retail therapy of the garden variety too.

The kids certainly aren’t left out, and there’s even more than ever this year. The gorgeously decorated children’s gardens are always a hit – this year’s theme is Alice in Wonderland. There’s a super fun comical circus-style performance of Circus Wonderland: A Neverland Adventure in the new Wonderland Spiegeltent plus the essential big Ferris wheel ride and more.

Is there food at Floriade?

You won’t go hungry or thirsty at Floriade! There’s lots of yummy food stalls plus the delicious pop up Agostini’s pavilion Italian restaurant. Bars include the Bentspoke Brewing Beer Garden, Underground Spirits Gin Garden and more.

Is Floriade Canberra suitable for children?

Yes, Floriade flower festival in Canberra is suitable for all ages.

Floriade is free! There is no entry fee for Canberra Floriade.

4. – Sydney – Waru – journey of the small turtle – Bangarra Dance Theatre

Waru – journey of the small turtle is Bangarra’s first performance especially for young children. A story of discovery and survival inspired by the lives of green turtles. This charming immersive and interactive Torres Strait Islander culture dance performance is designed for small children ages 3-7 years to enjoy.

The show will also travel to several other Australian cities after the September school holidays, including Geelong, Goulburn, Shoalhaven, Cairns and Darwin.

Where can I watch the Sydney NYE fireworks with the kids?

Being at Sydney Harbour on New Year’s Eve is always a memorable way to ring in the New Year, but when you become a parent you may suddenly realise that going to the fireworks isn’t quite as easy as it used to be.

It’s not like you can just turn up and hang out like you used to! Negotiating the jostling crowds along the Harbour-front pavements or staking out a spot for twelve hours for a free vantage point is unlikely to be an option now you have kids along with you. Enter: Bridgeview!

When we discovered the Bridgeview New Year’s Eve event at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney we found it to be a fantastic way for families to enjoy the Sydney fireworks.

At Bridgeview you can spread out your picnic blanket and listen to live music as you watch the kids run around and play.

Throughout the night you’ll be entertained by live bands and a DJ playing a wide genres ranging from the rock and roll classics to the latest hits.

The dance floor is the perfect place to get moving and have even more fun together, especially between the family and midnight fireworks!

You don’t even have to worry about bringing along food for everyone, because a personal picnic hamper is included in each ticket price.

Because Bridgeview is a family friendly ticketed event, there’s plenty of room to move with no big crowds – and so no worries!

Best of all, you have centre-stage views right across Sydney Harbour to the Harbour Bridge for the main event – the world-famous Sydney New Year’s Eve fireworks!

How to get to the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney

Bridgeview event location: Tarpeian Lawn, Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney

Where to enter: The entrance to Bridgeview is off Macquarie Street, which is closed to traffic on New Year’s Eve.

What to bring (and not to!): One of the best things about the supplied picnic hampers and water bottle it’s that you don’t have to carry food.

Do bring a picnic blanket to sit on but camp chairs and inflatable furniture are not allowed (pillows and low beach chairs are okay).

Don’t forget hats, sunscreen and wet weather ponchos to cover all eventualities. You can bring small fold up umbrellas, but not long ones. You can bring bug spray along too, but we didn’t need to use it.

You are permitted to bring and wear glow sticks and fun NYE headbands – but not party poppers or any kinds of crackers/fireworks of your own.

Also take note of this Bridgeview 2022 prohibited items sign on what NOT to bring with you…

Where to park: It’s a 15-minute walk to the Bridgeview entrance from the Domain Car Park. Closer car parks like the Opera House car park are not accessible on New Year’s Eve due to temporary road closures.

Closest train station to the Royal Botanic Garden: Martin Place Station is closest (950m) followed by St James Station (Circular Quay railway station is closed on New Year’s Eve from 5pm until Midnight)

1. Cinderella the Musical

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella the musical is a such a wonderful treat to see, and it’s now playing in Sydney right through the Sydney school holidays until the 29th of January!

We loved our night at this simply stunning musical theatre performance. There’s plenty of pre-show fun to be had at Cinderella too.

Take your photo next to the beautiful full-sized Cinderella style carriage in the forecourt. Inside there’s gorgeous Cinderella merchandise on offer, snacks and drinks including a special Cinderella-themed pink slushies served inside Cinderella cups.

Lavish costumes, wonderful musical numbers and the ever-magical tale of Cinderella will have your whole family spellbound during the show.

We were delighted to be invited to the opening night of Come From Away at the Theatre Royal Sydney.
This brilliant musical tells the incredible but true 9/11 story of a very special town in Canada.

There was so much talent and diversity onstage at Come From Away. We just loved this musical theatre show. The standing ovation nearly took the roof off, too – and that’s always a sign that this is a must-see theatre production.

Come From Away is now playing at the Theatre Royal Sydney until 29 January 2023.

4. – Puss In Boots – the movie

We headed along to see the special Australian Premiere of the much-anticipated DreamWorks movie PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH in Sydney at the State Theatre.

The event was so festive. Santa even introduced the movie – along with Puss In Boots himself!

The Puss In Boots – The Last Wish movie is such hilariously good fun. It was exactly what we expected from everyone’s witty, swash-buckling pussy cat in knee-boots – we all loved it!
Go and see PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH for yourself – it’s in cinemas from Boxing Day.

5. Australian Geographic Our Country

We were excited to attend the global premiere of Australian Geographic: Our Country Immersive Experience in Sydney.

It’s hard to describe and do this multi-sensory experience justice here – you really need to be in amongst it in person to see and feel all the incredible beauty and wonder that is – well, our country of Australia!

This is a simply amazing experience that sweeps through the senses with jaw dropping cinematography. It makes you want to tour the entirety of the Australian continent immediately!

This week we attended the opening night of the new theatre production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and it has cast its magical spell over Melbourne already!

Opening Night – the hottest event in Melbourne!

The Opening Night event was held in the forecourt of the Princess Theatre, and had to be the best party in town!

A star studded VIP invitation-only event, there were shoulder-to-shoulder Melbourne elite, TV celebrities, social media influencers – and of course, die-hard Harry Potter fans! We felt so thrilled to be there.

One thing about Harry Potter is that everyone loves him! Attendees were embracing the theme en masse, and costumed appropriately. Robes twirled, scarves swung and wands swished and flicked everywhere. Because let’s face it – dressing up for Hogwarts is so much fun!

We pulled my girl’s precious Hogwarts robes out of the wardrobe and added a few new accessories, including my new favourite – a screaming Mandrake scarf!

This premiere event took full advantage of the beloved magical Potter theme with several impressive installations. They proved perfect for fun family and Instagram photos.

The first thing to catch our eye entering the event was a massive flaming golden snitch dominating the forecourt. It was an impressive sight that served to emphasise the flickering, magical atmosphere.

As we circulated we posed for some really fun Harry Potter themed photos.

There was a Dumbledore picture frame you could step into, like the moving pictures on the walls at Hogwarts.

There was even a Platform 9¾ wall, complete with a half-through baggage trolley – so that you could pretend to make a run at the wall of course!

A red carpet photo wall was there too, and perhaps the most fun surprise of all – a trolley lady handing out chocolate!

The Hogwarts Express Trolley Lady

The trolley lady was just like the one in the Harry Potter movies on the Hogwarts Express! We were met with a cocky “Anything from the trolley, dears?”. Potter fans from way-back in, I thought my girls were going to jump for joy at the sight of her!

It wasn’t just my teenagers clamouring around her, either – adults left right and centre were excitedly lining up to interact with the trolley lady, and get their own chocolate! Harry Potter of course now has generations of adult fans too.

A brand new version of Harry Potter And The Cursed Child

This Wizarding World licensed production is a Potter Head’s dream! A brand new, reimagined version of Harry Potter And The Cursed Child that has been combined into one part instead of the original two part version. The result is a fast-paced exciting tale that is a delight to watch.

On with the show! Act 1

From the moment you enter the theatre, the atmosphere is other-worldly. You can hear eerie, indistinct train station platform calls echoing in the light-studded dim of the historic Princess Theatre.

The stage offers a mysterious glimpse at what is to come, with suitcases spotlighted by a station clock.

A levitating bowler hat is seemingly suspended above the stage, and you find yourself trying to puzzle out how it’s actually DOING THAT? The answer just may be – magic!

The show starts off at a run, and at the appearance of each original character, there are audience roars of approval and love.

The whole gang is back for this play – Harry (Gareth Reeves), Ron (Michael Whalley), Ginny (Lucy Goleby), Hermione (Paula Arundell) and Draco (Lachlan Woods)…plus some fun surprise come-backs! But this magical tale is really all about the new generation. New characters to instantly adore such as Albus Potter (Ben Walter), Scorpius Malfoy (Nyx Calder) and Rose (Aisha Aidara) .

This play is very-much the story of what happens next – a continuation of the Harry Potter stories.

With a whirl of wizard and witches robes, scenes change and magical twists, turns and slight of hand illusions happen seamlessly.

Intermission

Intermission seemed to come all too soon, but somehow everyone replenished their drinks and snacks from the Princess Theatre bar in time to be back in their seats for the second act – no mean feat by theatre staff!

Harry Potter and the Cursed Chid Act 2

Act 2 was every bit as wonderful as the first, and the audience were so ready for it – you could feel the anticipation before it even began. After all, the stage was already set with an ominous Dark Mark!

I don’t want to go into too much detail or give out any spoilers, however I will say that this show takes you from wonder to joy and even to delighted fear!

The audience was completely caught up in what was happening on stage – and off of it!

Is the Harry Potter Play suitable for children?

My teenagers (and myself) loved this show. For older primary school aged children up, this would be a wonderful outing and magical experience. That said, I would probably leave the younger kids at home due to a scary section. Under-fours are not permitted at all.

A standing ovation

One things for sure- this new show is a highly entertaining, and often completely astonishing  production that will have you on the edge of your seat.

At the end of the play as the cast came to take their bows they were met with a very well deserved, noisy standing ovation. It was an obvious seal of audience approval. This fabulous production is a hit – and a truly spellbinding way to spend a special night out in Melbourne.

My girls and I have been lucky enough to attend and review some of the hottest shows and movies in town lately! Each one has been an incredible experience and absolutely Mother’s Day gift-worthy! Both myself and my girls truly loved each experience – and what could make a more perfect for Mother’s Day gift than giving the opportunity for you to spend more time together? In the order that we saw them, here are our three favourite theatre show and movie recommendations for Mother’s Day…

1 – 9 to 5 The Musical – in Sydney, then Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide

A smash hit in London’s West End, 9 to 5 The Musical is a bright, colourful, fun and often hilarious musical. Presented and introduced by the stunning Dolly Parton (a star of the original 9 to 5 movie), the all-star Australian cast (including non-other than Marina Prior, Casey Donovan, Erin Clare, Eddie Perfect and Caroline O’Connor!) is just amazing – such outstanding singing and dancing! To see so much talent together on one stage is a real treat. It was clear that entire theatre audience was absolutely loving the show – everyone was roaring, laughing and basically riveted- especially us! Family friendly and lots of fun, don’t miss 9 to 5 The Musical – it makes a wonderful night out! But hurry – Sydney closes this weekend on Mother’s Day, so get your tickets now!

3 – SIX The Musical – in Canberra, then Adelaide, Melbourne, New Zealand, Brisbane

Rock concert meets musical theatre, SIX THE MUSICAL is a high energy, often hilarious modern re-telling of the stories of the wives of Henry VIII. With no interval and high energy, super-catchy numbers, this is an incredibly entertaining show that grabs you and doesn’t let you go from start to finish. From the moment the curtain raises the six Queens absolutely own the stage. Incredible dancing and singing rule the Royals here, with glitter, glam and a whole lot of sass – this musical is an absolute don’t-miss, and perfect for you and mum to enjoy together – because Queens Rule!

4 – An American In Paris – The Musical – in Sydney, Perth, Adelaide

An absolute smorgasbord for the eyes, this old school Broadway musical is a sheer delight to witness. The Australian Ballet meets Musical Theatre to bring technical dancing to this gorgeously romantic musical. The result – incredible dancing AND singing which you simply never want to end. The Gershwin score soars as you follow this comedy of romantic errors between a young American soldier and a beautiful French girl (Robbie Fairchild & Leanne Cope) – with the audience alternately squealing, laughing and clapping spontaneously along – it’s just-that-good! This is the perfect mother-daughter evening out – what a wonderful Mother’s Day gift this would make!

1 – Last call! The Sydney Royal Easter Show

If you haven’t taken the kids to the Sydney Royal Easter Show yet – well, you’re really missing out! This year you can walk through the actual Big Brother House, do the animal walk to see chickens, sheep, horses and feed and pet all the animals in the Farmyard Nursery (get a photo of the kids holding a baby lamb there!).

Then go watch impossibly muscled up men at the wood chopping arena – where else can you see it, after all?!  Eat your fill of the most incredible array of (absolutely delicious) show food, watch the street parade, check out the crafts where you’ll find incredible cakes, pet all kinds of dogs (maybe not the cats!), visit the Lifestyle Pavilion to have scones with the CWA ladies, sit atop a Police motorcycle, get a free RAT test from the NSW Gov stand and lay in a row of massage chairs. Aaah!

Then maybe stray to the different ride carnivals, ride the big wheel, buy copious amounts of showbags (Bertie Beetle bags are the cheapest at $3 but the big name bags such as Sonic, Paw Patrol & CoComelon are in the $20’s) and finish off the day with some Didgeridoo Fireworks! Phew!

Don’t forget to buy tickets online before you go as they do sell out. Public transport is included in your ticket, or if you’re driving be sure to book first – P1 is your closest Sydney Olympic Park Easter Show parking station choice.

2 – Sydney Tower Eye Sydney’s Highest 80s Arcade event

It’s time to party like it’s 1981 – a time when perms were socially acceptable, as were bubble gum jeans and enormous hoop earrings. Yes, that was me – and not that much has changed! Take a ride up the Sydney Tower where you will find it has been transformed into an 80s video arcade for the holidays! You get to play on 80’s arcade games to your heart’s content – what’s not to love? No coins required, because it’s included in your general entrance ticket. If ever you needed an excuse to visit the Sydney Tower Eye, then this is it! Table Top Pac Man, Space Invaders, Donkey Kong, Upright pin ball machines, twin car racers, twin motor bikes, dance video games and heaps more are all there for the playing.

Checking out the amazing 360 degree views of Sydney city and beyond from the massive windows is pretty cool too.

There’s even an over 18’s night time bar sessions – how fun that would be (I can dream)!

Grab your 80’s fluro (okay, so you don’t need to go QUITE as over the top as we did at the media event) and get UP there!

3 – Sydney Raging Waters are open during April holidays!

Sydney Raging Waters is awesome fun, and you may not realise that they are still open these April school holidays! We had the best time when we were invited there earlier this year so I just couldn’t leave it out of our list when they invited us back again these holidays. There’s a special discount on right now too, which is buy one single ticket and get one half price – too good to miss!

Sydney Raging Waters is such a fantastic day out for the whole family. Take my advice and book a VIP Cabana so you have a cosy base to leave your gear in and order food from too. (I love that lazy factor!)

Ride the thrilling water slides (there are just so many of them!) for big kids, teenagers and parents or the scaled down version for the little kids. There’s water play areas for the non-swimmers, tiny tots and toddlers too. Catch some waves in the massive but gentle wave pool beach as lifeguards keep an eye out, or just go for a never ending floating ring circuit on the Dinosaur Lagoon. (Possibly the most relaxing heated pool activity ever!)

4 – Sydney Aquarium & Sydney Zoo Peppa Pig event

Invited and we couldn’t make it to this one too, but we’ve seen the SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium and WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo pics for this event and can’t imagine any toddler, preschooler or kindergarten Peppa fan wouldn’t want to get to this event in a hurry!!

Even if they’re not keen on Peppa (as if!), it’s the Sydney Aquarium and Zoo, which are epic Sydney School Holidays ideas anyhow. We never, ever get tired of visiting Sydney Aquarium!

5 – Disney+ Drive In at Openair Cinemas

Throw up the hatchback, pull out the fairy lights and cushions and sit back in your car for a Disney classic movie at the Openair Cinema’s Drive In. I don’t remember Drive ins ever being as fun as this one, with roller skating snack delivery waiters and a huge light-up mickey ears installation to take your own super-cool Instagram shots beneath. Don’t worry if you don’t have a car – couples can snuggle down in the red bean bags of the Doordash “The Park” and watch the show with their very own volume-controlled radio! Order your dinner with Doordash for a 30% discount and have it delivered to you without even lifting a finger thanks to QR codes. Supermarkets and cooking are soooo last school hols!

Drive In patrons (and mums and dads) never had it so good.
