<p>Winter is usually the time to batten down the hatches and stay indoors, but the Ballarat Winter Festival is the perfect excuse to take a weekend or winter school holidays trip away, and banish those Melbourne winter blues!</p>

<p>This family-friendly festival offers a whole bunch of wintery fun to enjoy together. Ballarat is an easy two hour&#8217;s drive from the Melbourne CBD, so it makes for the perfect winter escape.</p>
<p>There are a range of fun activities and attractions on offer, plus plenty of excellent family accommodation options available. The whole city of Ballarat gets into the spirit of the festival. There are special interactive art murals (viewable with a special app downloaded to your phone) to be found down charming paved laneways. A huge range of fabulous family-friendly restaurants are scattered around the city too, featuring delicious, and sometimes quite unusual, menu options &#8211; such as these rainbow pancakes!</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-7179" src="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ballarat-winter-wonderlights-festival-6-1024x768.jpg" alt="Ballarat rainbow pancakes" width="590" height="443" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ballarat-winter-wonderlights-festival-6.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ballarat-winter-wonderlights-festival-6-1000x750.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ballarat-winter-wonderlights-festival-6-768x576.jpg 768w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ballarat-winter-wonderlights-festival-6-250x188.jpg 250w" sizes="(max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px" /></p>
<p>The Ballarat Winter Festival certainly has a great line-up of stand-out attractions. Let&#8217;s take a closer look at some must-see events and locations to visit during your visit&#8230;</p>
<h2>The Ballarat Sovereign Hill Winter Wonderlights Festival</h2>
<h3>No time to read? Watch our Ballarat Sovereign Hill Winter Wonderlights YouTube video</h3>
<p><iframe loading="lazy" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/eQyJ85i9VRQ" width="450" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"><span class="mce_SELRES_start" style="width: 0px; line-height: 0; overflow: hidden; display: inline-block;" data-mce-type="bookmark"></span></iframe></p>
<p>First up of course is the big-guns of the Ballarat Winter Festival &#8211; the famous Sovereign Hill Winter Wonderlights. Sovereign Hill is a simply brilliant family attraction at any time of the year, but in Winter it comes alive with a magical paintbox of projected colours and animations.</p>
<p>During the day you can visit this wonderfully recreated historical village as normal. There are period shops and buildings to explore, underground mine train tours, creek gold panning, horse and coach rides and so much more. When evening falls, the entire village is transformed into a magically-lit wonderland. Take a walk through long fairy light tunnels lining the lake. Enjoy free craft activities for the kids, and yummy seasonal fare inside the heated pavilion.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-7180" src="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ballarat-winter-wonderlights-festival-17-1024x768.jpg" alt="Sovereign Hill Winter Wonderlights Festival" width="590" height="443" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ballarat-winter-wonderlights-festival-17.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ballarat-winter-wonderlights-festival-17-1000x750.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ballarat-winter-wonderlights-festival-17-768x576.jpg 768w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ballarat-winter-wonderlights-festival-17-250x188.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px" /></p>
<p>On main street, gasp in wonder as flames erupt from the big chimney stack. Your kids will be enchanted by &#8211; and perhaps even dance in &#8211; the faux &#8220;snow&#8221; which drifts down around them. Fun, colourful animations light up the buildings in a fantastical display of wonderous proportions, unique to this popular tourist destination. This is a whole new dimension to Sovereign Hill you&#8217;ve never seen before &#8211; and it will have your whole family wanting to return to, year after year.</p>
<h2>The Ballarat Winter Festival Ice Rink</h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-7170" src="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ballarat-winter-wonderlights-festival-18-1024x768.jpg" alt="Ballarat Winter Festival ice skating" width="590" height="443" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ballarat-winter-wonderlights-festival-18-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ballarat-winter-wonderlights-festival-18-1000x750.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ballarat-winter-wonderlights-festival-18-768x576.jpg 768w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ballarat-winter-wonderlights-festival-18-250x188.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px" /></p>
<p>What is winter without going for an ice skate, and in Ballarat you&#8217;ll find a great ice skating installation right in the middle of the city! Rug up in your most stylish winter-woollies and hit the The Ballarat Winter Festival Ice Rink for a fun morning or afternoon skate. There are several skating sessions each day of the festival. In addition to standard ice skate hire there are super-cute sliding penguins for the beginners or little kids. There are special strap-on skates available too for even the tiniest of toddlers and pre-schoolers to make it a great fun experience for everyone.</p>
<h2>Ballarat Winter Festival 2019 Winteractive Arcade</h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-7173 size-large" src="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ballarat-winter-wonderlights-festival-12-1024x768.jpg" alt="Ballarat Winter Festival Winteractive" width="590" height="443" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ballarat-winter-wonderlights-festival-12.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ballarat-winter-wonderlights-festival-12-1000x750.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ballarat-winter-wonderlights-festival-12-768x576.jpg 768w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ballarat-winter-wonderlights-festival-12-250x188.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px" /></p>
<p>One of the really fun and unusual Ballarat attractions during the 2019 Winter Festival would have to be the Winteractive Arcade. This high-tech interactive event was open on two weekends during the Winter Festival, and had us entertained for an entire afternoon. Located in the grand old Mining Exchange building, interactive art animates in fascinating ways thanks to a downloadable free app. There&#8217;s also interactive fashion you, virtual reality (VR) stations &#8211; it’s all awesome fun!</p>
<p>If you have a gamer in your family then they are going to love taking part in playing in the five-player competitions on the big screen, plus there are smaller gaming stations too. A café onsite takes care of anyone wanting a break, or simply waiting for their kids to become bored (here&#8217;s a tip &#8211; never happens!). Definitely don&#8217;t miss this one!</p>

<p>And so in the blink of an eye, our last holiday day dawned.</p>
<p>We had been on the road for nearly two weeks, and although we&#8217;d been having a brilliant time, we had reached the point where we needed to go home to touch base &#8211; you know, wash clothes, visit the pets, read the mail&#8230;that kind of thing&#8230;LOL!</p>
<p>So we set off from Ballarat headed for home &#8211; but not before stopping in at the local Maccas for our morning coffee, tea and orange juices.</p>
<p>Ballarat McDonalds is worthy of a mention &#8211; located on Bakery Hill in Ballarat, the building is old brick in keeping with the historic location. Inside it&#8217;s huge and quite stylish &#8211; built on several levels, and complete with multiple TVs playing the morning news &#8211; Tony Abbott is still PM apparently (funny how blissfully out of touch you can become when you&#8217;re away from home and out of routine!).</p>
<p>There is an excellent indoor children&#8217;s playground &#8211; so this could serve as a good parent travel break spot &#8211; plus there&#8217;s always the free wifi, which also works in the car park!</p>
<figure id="attachment_1459" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1459" style="width: 1024px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0246.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1459" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0246.jpg" alt="Ballarat McDonalds has a great kid's playground" width="1024" height="684" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0246.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0246-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0246-250x166.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1459" class="wp-caption-text">Ballarat McDonalds has a great kid&#8217;s playground</figcaption></figure>
<p>Our total trip home would be around the 7-8 hour mark (without breaks) if we drove straight through. With a car load of people, we decided to aim for Albury, and keep going if all was well with everyone, and I wasn&#8217;t too tired &#8211; there&#8217;s nothing worse, or more dangerous than driving really tired.</p>
<p>In planning the route home, we had the options of driving the straight highway back to Melbourne and then up the freeway, or going cross-country to the freeway. The latter was also the longest option, but nobody wanted to backtrack, so we opted for the scenic route!</p>
<figure id="attachment_1462" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1462" style="width: 1024px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0258.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1462" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0258.jpg" alt="Hanging Rock looms over the tourist car park" width="1024" height="684" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0258.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0258-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0258-250x166.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1462" class="wp-caption-text">Hanging Rock looms over the tourist car park</figcaption></figure>
<p>We passed along back roads, country towns and zig-zagged our way across the countryside. We passed through Hepburn, home of the famous springs and spas &#8211; it was so beautiful there.</p>
<p>We stopped at Tourist Info at Woodend to use the (very clean) toilets there. Reading the information plaque outside was interesting &#8211; Woodend was named for its location at the end of the &#8220;gloomy and dangerous Black Forest&#8221;. I thought it sounded a little Hansel-and-Gretel-esque!</p>
<figure id="attachment_1460" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1460" style="width: 1024px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0256.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1460" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0256.jpg" alt="This Woodend plaque tells that Woodend was the end of the gloomy and dangerous Black Forest!" width="1024" height="684" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0256.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0256-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0256-250x166.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1460" class="wp-caption-text">This Woodend plaque tells that Woodend was the end of the gloomy and dangerous Black Forest!</figcaption></figure>
<p>The Macedon Ranges were huge, and we had a quick drive up to the original Hanging Rock (as in the eerie old movie Picnic at Hanging Rock).</p>
<p>We stopped at the small town of Lancefield to find a bakery, and bought four meat pies and donuts &#8211; not the healthiest lunch perhaps, but a fast, easy one that I knew everyone would eat &#8211; holiday-fare survival!</p>
<p>Kilmore was our last town before getting on to the Freeway, and we stopped in at the park there to eat lunch and for the kids to stretch their legs on the excellent playground there &#8211; great for a family stop.</p>
<figure id="attachment_1458" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1458" style="width: 1024px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0276.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1458" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0276.jpg" alt="Kilmore playground makes for a good family rest-stop" width="1024" height="684" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0276.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0276-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0276-250x166.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1458" class="wp-caption-text">Kilmore playground makes for a good family rest-stop</figcaption></figure>
<p>It took us around an hour and a half to make it from Ballarat to the freeway which led to Sydney, and from then on it was straightforward cruise control most of the way home.</p>
<p>Once we reached the freeway, for the first time during the whole trip, I allowed the girls to watch movies together on their iPads. Not allowing the kids to spend the journey glued to their tablets was one of the best decisions I had, kind of unconsciously, made. It left the girls to look out of the windows, write in their journals, chat with each other and us, read books and play all sorts of imaginary games together &#8211; and get up to mischief! I did allow them to use the iPads / iPod to for photos or video, and the girls thought it was hilarious to make loud and crazy songs and then play them back to me whilst I pretended to be annoyed! It was all good fun!</p>
<p>We had a few rest stops, including Caltex Seymour and Gundagai McDonalds (avoid the Gundagai McDonalds &#8211; it was a mass of flies inside!) and with the help of a few coffees I was feeling fine, and drove the rest of the way home that evening!</p>
<p>In the end&#8230;</p>
<p>we had travelled for 12 days,<br />
drove 2,500 kilometres<br />
stayed in 8 hotels/motels<br />
&#8230;and made many new wonderful family memories!</p>
<p>Thank you for joining us on our Victorian Road Trip &#8211; we hope that you&#8217;ve enjoyed reading about our meandering journey. Hopefully you&#8217;ve enjoyed coming along for the ride &#8211; maybe we&#8217;ve even inspired you to go searching for your own adventures with your kids!</p>
<p>I hope you join us again for another family jaunt as we family-test-run our next destination! Now about that huge pile of washing&#8230;</p>

<p>We had a free day today in Ballarat and were invited to explore the Sovereign Hill outdoor museum!</p>
<p>Sovereign Hill is a really fun and educational (but don&#8217;t tell the kids that!) day out with the family.  We had seen the Sound and Light show there last night, and were keen to explore this historical tourist park in daylight.</p>
<p>Rest-assured, you are not going to run out of things to do at Sovereign Hill. We were pretty-much going full-speed ahead all day, right up until 5pm closing time, because there is just so much to see and do &#8211; and we still missed a couple of things!</p>
<figure id="attachment_1420" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1420" style="width: 1024px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0068.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-1420 size-full" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0068.jpg" alt="Stepping back in time - an Apothecary's shop" width="1024" height="684" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0068.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0068-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0068-250x166.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1420" class="wp-caption-text">Stepping back in time &#8211; an Apothecary&#8217;s (that&#8217;s a Chemist to you and me!) shop</figcaption></figure>
<p>Sovereign Hill is a gold-fields Outdoor Museum &#8211; an adventure theme park located in the historic gold mining city of Ballarat.</p>
<p>This gold-rush town that is so cleverly recreated that it really does capture the atmosphere of the mid-1800&#8217;s, and make you feel as though you have stepped back in time!</p>
<figure id="attachment_1419" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1419" style="width: 1024px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_09251.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1419" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_09251.jpg" alt="Sovereign Hill town main street" width="1024" height="684" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_09251.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_09251-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_09251-250x166.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1419" class="wp-caption-text">Sovereign Hill town main street</figcaption></figure>
<p>The shops that line the town streets are real shops selling old-fashioned wares and authentic souvenirs, such as metal worked in the workshop. There are real horses in the stables, turkeys in the yards and period-dressed folk strolling about interacting with the visitors &#8211; you&#8217;ll get many a &#8220;Good day Madam!&#8221;, with a tip of the top-hat!</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a little video grab of what the bustling main street is like&#8230;</p>
<p><iframe loading="lazy" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/NsbyIugy7l0" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></p>
<p>There is building after building of replica hotels, banks, a theatre, shops, foundry&#8217;s, bakeries (great for a quick, family-friendly snack!). Don&#8217;t worry about cash currency to buy souvenirs at the shops &#8211; all of them accept modern-day plastic (There&#8217;s something quite surreal about a lady with a bonnet and hoop-skirts accepting a credit card)!</p>
<p>Of course some of the main attractions at Sovereign Hill are the replica gold mines &#8211; 60 metres down, and accessible by a carriage-train that goes &#8211; well, straight down, really!</p>
<p>We slowly made our way up to the big wooden framework tower that stands over the gold mine entrance and went into the mining office to purchase tickets for a gold mine tour (Extra cost of $15 for one adult and two children). There are also free on-foot gold mine tours, but we didn&#8217;t have time to do one of these, so I can&#8217;t tell you what they are like.</p>
<blockquote><p>Tip &#8211; You do need to book a gold mine tour like we did via train, and there are three to choose from that only run once a day, so go early to plan and book the one that interests you!</p></blockquote>
<p>We chose the first gold tour for that day at 11 o&#8217;clock, &#8220;Gold Labyrinth&#8221;, but there was also &#8220;Trapped&#8221; and the &#8220;Chinese Brothers&#8221;. We planned on taking another gold mine tour later, but we simply ran out of time!</p>
<figure id="attachment_1422" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1422" style="width: 965px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0959.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1422" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0959.jpg" alt="All aboard the underground train!" width="965" height="619" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0959.jpg 965w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0959-224x145.jpg 224w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0959-250x160.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 965px) 100vw, 965px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1422" class="wp-caption-text">All aboard the underground train!</figcaption></figure>
<p>We were very excited when the time came for the underground gold mine tour and they boarded us on the small train to descend to 60 metres below the ground!</p>
<p>Down, down into the dark the train descended in pitch-black &#8211; we all chatted nervously, excitedly until a minute later we saw a tiny light ahead &#8211; a lantern! The train stopped and It was time to get out for our guided tour and walk the passageways of the recreated mine below the town, where we would learn all about miner&#8217;s conditions and gold digging.</p>
<figure id="attachment_1421" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1421" style="width: 1024px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0946.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1421" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0946.jpg" alt="Down the mines we go!" width="1024" height="684" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0946.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0946-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0946-250x166.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1421" class="wp-caption-text">Down the mines we go!</figcaption></figure>
<p>45 minutes later, our train &#8211; this time in reverse &#8211; backed us up to the surface again, and we eagerly set off to look through some more town businesses and buildings.</p>
<p>At the candle shop, the kids got to make their very-own rainbow coloured candle (Extra cost activity &#8211; $3 per candle). The girls were carefully instructed on how to dip and mix their wax colours safely (parent assistance is needed for very small children), and they both ended up with very respectable-looking rainbow-candles!</p>
<figure id="attachment_1424" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1424" style="width: 1024px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0105.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-1424 size-full" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0105.jpg" alt="Look what we made! Kids can make their very-own rainbow candles!" width="1024" height="684" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0105.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0105-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0105-250x166.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1424" class="wp-caption-text">Look what we made! Kids can make their very-own rainbow candles!</figcaption></figure>
<p>We decided that we needed candle-holders for them too, so we trooped across the road to the metal foundry to watch them being made, before buying a smart little candle holder &#8211; complete with match box holder!</p>
<p>We then continued on to the top of the main street, and there we found a Bowling Saloon.</p>
<p>Bowling is a free activity which is great fun and very easy for the kids to pick up. Players bowl a wooden ball in a two-handed under-legs style down the wooden alley to hit the wooden pins. It&#8217;s not difficult to do, so even the littlest kid (perhaps with a little help from Mum or Dad!) can have the thrill of knocking over pins! This activity makes for a lot of old-fashioned family fun.</p>

<p>Although we could happily have kept bowling longer, we were all starting to get hungry, so we headed back down the main street in search of food and cool drinks &#8211; here in Ballarat the hot weather had finally caught up with us, and it was over 30 degrees.</p>
<p>We found a working bakery and bought some yummy pies to eat while we sat down on seats on the footpath to watch the gold-town world go by. In front of us was a horse trough, and the girls decided to help the horses out and top it up!</p>
<figure id="attachment_1447" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1447" style="width: 1024px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0024.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-1447 size-full" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0024.jpg" alt="There's lots of hands-on things to try out at Sovereign Hill" width="1024" height="684" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0024.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0024-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0024-250x166.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1447" class="wp-caption-text">Child labour &#8211; there&#8217;s lots of hands-on fun things to try out at Sovereign Hill</figcaption></figure>
<p>After lunch we resumed our exploring and went to inspect the library and beautiful theatre.</p>
<p>The nearby old-fashioned Tea Rooms tucked away in the back of one of the hotels looked so quaint, I would have loved to have grabbed a cuppa, but there was no time- there was still so much we wanted to see and do!</p>
<figure id="attachment_1425" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1425" style="width: 1024px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0044.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-1425 size-full" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0044.jpg" alt="Do come in! The candy shop has lots of yummy old-fashioned toffees</figcaption></figure>
<p>Next up was something we were all very keen to do &#8211; go on a Coach and Horses ride!</p>
<p>This was an extra cost activity, so I purchased tickets (Approximately $12 for 1 adult and 2 children) at the farrier shop and we lined up to wait.</p>
<blockquote><p>Tip &#8211; Don&#8217;t leave your coach and horses ride for too long, as they cut off selling tickets earlier than their 4pm finish time if they have a line-up!</p></blockquote>
<p>Two 7-minute coach rides later it was finally our turn.</p>
<p>It was utterly charming to be pulled along by these majestic big cart horses in a real enclosed coach with padded upholstery. The gentle clip-clop of the horses hooves and swaying of the coach, with a bustling gold mining town outside its little windows made this a really special must-do family experience.</p>

<p>At 1:30pm, Redcoat soldiers marched about the town, and had a special musket-firing ceremony. Be sure to stick your fingers in your child&#8217;s ears if they can&#8217;t do it for themselves &#8211; it&#8217;s very, very loud! After that, it&#8217;s photo opportunity time with the Redcoats, so don&#8217;t miss that!</p>
<figure id="attachment_1415" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1415" style="width: 1024px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0135.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1415" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0135.jpg" alt="Dressing up for an old time photo was so much fun!" width="1024" height="684" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0135.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0135-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0135-250x166.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1415" class="wp-caption-text">Dressing up for an old time photo was so much fun!</figcaption></figure>
<p>A little earlier in the day we had booked ourselves in for an old-time photo (A hefty $87).</p>
<figure id="attachment_1413" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1413" style="width: 250px" class="wp-caption alignright"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/CCI09022015_00003.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-1413" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/CCI09022015_00003.jpg" alt="Our old-time family photo - does my bustle look big in this?!" width="250" height="369" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/CCI09022015_00003.jpg 520w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/CCI09022015_00003-169x250.jpg 169w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1413" class="wp-caption-text">Our old-time family photo &#8211; does my bustle look big in this?!</figcaption></figure>
<p>I had never realised just how much fun this can be! We got all dressed up &#8211; The girls giggled when they saw my hoop skirt going on, and exclaimed, &#8220;You&#8217;re beautiful Mummy!&#8221; when I emerged from the change room, resplendent in an enormous blue satin dress &#8211; awww, my kids are so lovely (and blind!).</p>
<p>The girls were now in sweet gingham check dresses, and loving every second of dressing up as olden-time girls. They got to pose with beautiful dolls, and both girls looked so adorable in their long pantaloons and bonnets!</p>
<p>After the photo, we wandered over to Battery House for a bit more gold-education. This is a display building where we could learn about the process of extracting gold from rock.</p>
<p>In this area we also went to watch gold pouring &#8211; that is, gold being heated up and poured into a gold ingot &#8211; worth $160,000! Just watching the skill with which this was done was fascinating, and there was lots of ooohs and aaaahs from the audience!</p>
<figure id="attachment_1427" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1427" style="width: 1024px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0987.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1427" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0987.jpg" alt="This is what $160,000 worth of gold looks like!" width="1024" height="684" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0987.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0987-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0987-250x166.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1427" class="wp-caption-text">Pouring gold into gold bars &#8211; This is what $160,000 worth of gold looks like!</figcaption></figure>
<p>We continued down this back road to the school building, but alas! Soon after we came out Samantha went for a big skid on the loose gravel and skinned both of her knees. She let out a scream that almost equalled the gold mine whistle (and take it from me &#8211; that&#8217;s loud!).</p>
<p>We comforted her and walked her up to the ladies to clean her grazes and &#8211; miracle of miracles &#8211; I found two Barbie Band-aids floating around in my handbag &#8211; all better! Nothing was going to hold Samantha back from her main objective today &#8211; finding a nugget of gold!</p>
<figure id="attachment_1418" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1418" style="width: 1024px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0151.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-1418 size-full" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0151.jpg" alt="The Sovereign Hill gold diggings - here you can pan for real gold!" width="1024" height="684" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0151.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0151-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0151-250x166.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1418" class="wp-caption-text">The Sovereign Hill gold diggings &#8211; here you can pan for real gold!</figcaption></figure>
<p>We walked down to the gold panning creek. All you needed to do was pick up a shovel or pan and have a go! A miner did a display on how to find gold. Samantha was on a mission now, and both she and Brooke took off their shoes and socks to wade into the river and dig out some gold!</p>
<figure id="attachment_1417" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1417" style="width: 1024px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0226.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1417" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0226.jpg" alt="Gold-diggers! <p>We all took turns panning, and in the end both girls found minute specks of gold &#8211; just big enough to pick up and immediately lose &#8211; but we didn&#8217;t care &#8211; it had been a wonderful day at Sovereign Hill!</p>

It was at this point that we decided to leave the coast. We had reached the end of the Great Ocean road and its amazing sights officially at Warrnambool, and although Port Fairy was well worth the extra drive to visit, it was time to move on to new adventures!</p>
<p>So we headed off, but before leaving the coast altogether we stopped in again in Warrnambool, as we had been invited back to the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village to take a look at it in day-light after their great laser shipwrecking of the Loch Ard show last night.</p>
<p>The Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village was brilliant (there&#8217;s a feature review to come &#8211; watch this space!), with a fully recreated 1800&#8217;s seaside town &#8211; complete with farm animals! If you&#8217;re in Warrnambool, the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village is well worth a visit.</p>
<figure id="attachment_1392" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1392" style="width: 1024px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0683.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1392" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0683.jpg" alt="The Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village " width="1024" height="684" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0683.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0683-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0683-250x166.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1392" class="wp-caption-text">The Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village is well-worth a visit</figcaption></figure>
<p>Finally, we were ready to leave Warrnambool, and so I set the route on Google Maps and pointed the car inland towards Ballarat &#8211; the gold rush town! Warrnambool to Ballarat is a really easy drive, and although it&#8217;s lots of straight inland roads, it&#8217;s not boring. There are a few tiny hamlets along the way &#8211; you also pass by some interesting landmarks such as Elephant Mountain, a huge round-backed mountain that is quite in the shape of the top half of an Elephant!.</p>
<figure id="attachment_1394" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1394" style="width: 1024px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/elephant-mountain.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1394" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/elephant-mountain.jpg" alt="Elephant Mountain, Victoria" width="1024" height="684" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/elephant-mountain.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/elephant-mountain-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/elephant-mountain-250x166.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1394" class="wp-caption-text">Elephant Mountain, Victoria</figcaption></figure>
<p>One of the creeks we passed was named Haunted Gully &#8211; we speculated as to just why this would be! Now and then we would see a Koala or Kangaroo road sign, but no actual visible wildlife to speak of other than birds.</p>
<p>Around 2 hours after we left Warrnambool we pulled into Ballarat, a large and historically significant inland city. Ballarat was the location of a gold-rush from 1851 to the late 1860s and the location of the famous Eureka Stockade &#8211; a tragic clash where Ballarat miners rebelled against the government for unfair conditions. Ballarat is now a large and well-serviced city, with many beautiful old buildings.</p>
<figure id="attachment_1396" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1396" style="width: 1024px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/ballarat.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1396" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/ballarat.jpg" alt="Ballarat main-street" width="1024" height="684" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/ballarat.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/ballarat-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/ballarat-250x166.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1396" class="wp-caption-text">Ballarat main-street</figcaption></figure>
<p>We would be spending the next two nights at the Sovereign Park Motor Inn in Ballarat. This is a brilliant Motor Inn to stop at &#8211; just one kilometre down the road from Sovereign Hill, it&#8217;s great quality at a competitive price &#8211; with surprising facilities! You can read our <a title="Go to the Sovereign Park Motor Inn review..." href="http://letsgomum.com.au/sovereign-park-motor-inn-ballarat/" target="_blank">Sovereign Park Motor Inn review here</a>.</p>
<p>While the kids had a play in their indoor playground I ordered dinner for all of us from the connected The Red Lion restaurant. Luckily they also operate as room service, so I asked for dinner to be delivered to our room an hour later so that I could take the kids for a quick dip in the wonderful pool &#8211; heated indoor, with fountains, stepping stones and Jacuzzis! (At this point, I might just add that it is really hard to type when children keep sending gigantic splashes over the laptop to get you to come in!)</p>
<figure id="attachment_1395" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1395" style="width: 1024px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0847.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1395" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0847.jpg" alt="There's nothing like a refreshing swim after a road trip!" width="1024" height="684" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0847.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0847-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0847-250x166.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1395" class="wp-caption-text">There&#8217;s nothing like a refreshing swim after a road trip!</figcaption></figure>
<p>After the kids had burned off some energy in the pool we headed back to our room for dinner. The food was way beyond what you expect a Motor Inn room service to be &#8211; absolutely delicious! After dinner it was time to go to the Sovereign Hill Sound-And-Light Show.</p>
<p><strong>Sovereign Hill Sound-And-Light Show &#8220;Blood on the Southern Cross&#8221;</strong></p>
<p>The kids enjoyed the Sovereign Hill Sound-And-Light Show &#8220;Blood on the Southern Cross&#8221; show. I thought it was good, but given the multi-million dollar budget, it could have perhaps been a little more interactive.</p>
<p>The show starts off as a video presentation in a theatre, introducing the story of the Eureka Stockade, which is the event this show is based around. You are then moved outside of the theatre, down to the Sovereign Hill tourist park gold diggings area. There was quite a bit of standing around to watch this part of the show. The kids were surrounded by adults, and so couldn&#8217;t see much.</p>
<p>Much of the show, both at the diggings and at the main set location is basically lights going on and off in scattered tents and buildings, with a narrator and role-play dialogue played over the top. Sort of like an invisible play.</p>
<figure id="attachment_1397" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1397" style="width: 1393px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/sound-and-light-ballarat.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1397" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/sound-and-light-ballarat.jpg" alt="The Sovereign Hill Sound and Light show" width="1393" height="913" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/sound-and-light-ballarat.jpg 1393w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/sound-and-light-ballarat-1000x655.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/sound-and-light-ballarat-1024x671.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/sound-and-light-ballarat-250x163.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1393px) 100vw, 1393px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1397" class="wp-caption-text">The Sovereign Hill Sound and Light show</figcaption></figure>
<p>I overheard a couple of Australian tourists making critical remarks behind us as we went around each location as to how &#8220;interactive&#8221; they thought the show really was &#8211; and to a certain extent, I thought they were right. We just seemed to be shuffled around from one location to another for the same effects to tell each part of the story of the Eureka Stockade. That said, there were a couple of surprises during the show that made you sit up in surprise!</p>
<p>We were transported in a bus with connected open air carriages from the first outdoor scene at the diggings to the main set at the other side of Sovereign Hill site. This was the kids favourite part of the night &#8211; travelling through the dark village on a journey to who-knows-where! Upon arrival a couple of minutes later we were directed to another theatre which opened up to an outdoor set.</p>
<p>Seated in another theatre, the kids could actually see what was going on in this part of the show which was a vast improvement. The outdoor set for this main part of the show was life-size and huge &#8211; the scale of it was certainly impressive. However, again, with only sound and light and no actual character acting, following the story depended a lot upon your imagination. For this reason I think the kids had some trouble following the storyline. Many of the kids in the audience seemed restless. I asked my two children later what they thought the show was about &#8211; Samantha (7) had absolutely no idea, and while Brooke (9) could retell a couple of show events, she still didn&#8217;t have an overall understanding of the Eureka Stockade.</p>
<figure id="attachment_1393" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1393" style="width: 1024px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0883.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-1393 size-full" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0883.jpg" alt="The girls were delighted to meet the character actor from the Sovereign Hill Sound-And-Light Show " width="1024" height="684" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0883.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0883-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0883-250x166.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1393" class="wp-caption-text">After the show the girls were delighted to meet an actor from the Sovereign Hill night show!</figcaption></figure>
<p>At the end of the day though, even though they couldn&#8217;t follow it that well the kids did enjoy the Sovereign Hill sound and light show, so that of course is a real positive. They really loved the excitement and night-time experience of being at Sovereign Hill after-hours. I myself did find it entertaining, just not brilliant value for money as a family show.</p>
<p>As the show hadn&#8217;t started until 9pm due to daylight savings we didn&#8217;t get back to our hotel (just a minute away) until past 11pm. This made it a long night for the kids, but with Sovereign Hill not opening until 10am the next morning &#8211; our next activity &#8211; they could sleep-in &#8211; and they did!</p>
<p><em>Unfortunately you are not allowed to take photographs of the show, hence my lack of photographs &#8211; apologies for that, they wouldn&#8217;t budge on this point even for our blog, so I can&#8217;t show you any of it here.</em></p>

<p><em>Our family love the Sovereign Park Motor Inn for various reasons &#8211; we stayed there during our recent <a title="go to our Victorian road trip blogs..." href="http://letsgomum.com.au/category/countries/australia/victoria/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #9d7bdb;">Victorian road trip</span></a> and found it to be a home-away-from-home&#8230;</em></p>
<p><strong>I like the Sovereign Park Motor Inn because it ticks all of my Motor Inn boxes.</strong></p>
<p>Firstly, their location is just about perfect &#8211; not far from the city centre and just one kilometre from, and on the same road as, Sovereign Hill &#8211; the tourist attraction.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s nicely maintained and modern-looking on the outside. The grounds and gardens are attractive, and you really can park at your room door, and not ten cars away.</p>
<figure id="attachment_1291" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1291" style="width: 1024px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_08051.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-1291 size-full" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_08051.jpg" alt="Plenty of space to park with attractive grounds" width="1024" height="684" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_08051.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_08051-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_08051-250x166.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1291" class="wp-caption-text">Plenty of space to park with attractive grounds &#8211; this is just one area!</figcaption></figure>
<p>Our room is the family deluxe spa for a standard rate of $270 per night.</p>
<p>When you walk in the room, you notice that the furnishings are clean, new and modern. There&#8217;s a one-way see-through blind out to the courtyard so you can have light but maintain privacy. Other room features include excellent air conditioning, a large flat-screen TV, kitchenette with microwave, toaster and a generous half-fridge.</p>
<p>All the information you need is right there on the desk. Free wireless internet is available in the rooms (you just need to ok the terms and conditions to get it working), and the password is also displayed on the desk. Little things that make life much easier. If I had a dollar for every time I had to search just for reception&#8217;s phone extension number, or the wireless password to no avail&#8230;</p>
<p>They don&#8217;t skimp on the tea and coffee sachets either &#8211; another little thing, I know, but when you&#8217;re far from home, late at night and you just need that fourth cup of coffee with two sugars, you can have it!</p>
<figure id="attachment_1289" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1289" style="width: 1024px" class="wp-caption alignright"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0792.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1289" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0792.jpg" alt="Our bathroom was large with an excellent shower" width="1024" height="684" srcset="https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0792.jpg 1024w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0792-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/DSC_0792-250x166.jpg 250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1289" class="wp-caption-text">Our bathroom was large with an excellent shower</figcaption></figure>

<p>The Red Lion has absolutely delicious food that you can order by phone and they can deliver as room service for no extra charge, or you can eat in and the kids can play in the excellent covered</p>
<figure id="attachment_1293" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1293" style="width: 250px" class="wp-caption alignright"><a href="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/playground.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-1293" src="http://letsgomum.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/playground.jpg" alt="The indoor playground means you don't have to go searching for one in a park when you arrive..." width="250" height="374" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1293" class="wp-caption-text">The indoor playground means you don&#8217;t have to go searching for one in a park when you arrive&#8230;</figcaption></figure>
<p>kids playground whilst the adults get some head-space &#8211; Aaaah! This playground restaurant is as family-friendly as you get on the road, and perfect for traveling families with kids that need to burn off some energy after those long cooped up car-hours!</p>
<p>The Sovereign Park Motor Inn isn&#8217;t one of those basic, or run-down motor inns, but a deluxe one &#8211; yet at very competitive prices.</p>
<p>The kids love the Sovereign Park Motor Inn because it has an &#8220;awesome&#8221; (end Samantha and Brooke quote!) pool. The pool for us is a must. We had looked at some other Motor Inns online first, including the one inside Sovereign Hill and found they didn&#8217;t have pools, so this was one of the factors that decided us on the Sovereign Park Motor Inn.</p>
<p>So soon after we arrived when we went in search of the pool, we got quite a surprise when we found that the Sovereign Park Motor Inn goes far beyond the expected when it comes to sporting facilities. There&#8217;s actually a complete indoor sporting complex, with tennis court, pool table, table tennis table, gym and of course the huge indoor pool with little kids pool, water-falls and Jacuzzis. Amazing!</p>
<p>We thoroughly recommend the Sovereign Park Motor Inn, particularly if you are staying more than one night, and are looking for a top quality Ballarat Motor Inn with brilliant facilities!</p>
