Gibraltar Falls, Canberra – Australia’s natural swimming rock pools
The Let’s go Mum family reveal one of their favourite secret waterfall swimming pools in Canberra – and you don’t need a 4WD to get there!
Just a 30 minute drive from Canberra you’ll find one of our favourite Canberra summer-spots to cool off! Gibraltar Falls is a beautiful waterfall located in the Namadgi National Park. It features a natural chain of swimming holes at it’s top. The most beautiful pool is a natural infinity pool with a simply spectacular bush view towards Canberra, and well-worth the visit!
How to get to Gibraltar Falls
To get to Gibraltar Falls, head towards the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve Visitors Centre from Tharwa, along the Tidbinbilla Road.

Shortly before you reach the Visitor’s Centre, turn off onto the Corin Road. Passing the turn-off to Woods Reserve on your left, continue along Corin Road a few kilometres. As you head up a hill keep your eyes open for the Gibraltar Falls sign on the left.
It is sealed road all the way in to the Gibraltar Falls car park and picnic ground.
To walk in to the natural infinity swimming pool, you’ll need to follow the Gibraltar Falls walking track down towards the scenic look out. Half way along, duck under the rail and follow the goat-track trail just a few metres to reach the pools.
Snakes and other hazards
Watch your step. Whilst the falls are populated by many harmless lizards, snakes are also common visitors there. The native reptiles love how the huge boulders retain the sun’s warmth!
Another hazard to consider is the 160 metre drop over the edge of the waterfall. It is not guard-railed at the top, so be sure to keep a close watch on any small children.
It’s advisable not to swim at Gibraltar Falls in the colder months of late Autumn and Winter- Gibraltar Creek is located in an area which receives frequent snow falls. Even in mid-Summer, the water is quite chilly!
Keep Gibraltar Falls beautiful
Like any other natural wonder, if you’re visiting this stunning area of the Australian Capital Territory, be sure to leave it as you found it, and please take your rubbish with you!
